"... The island of Nantucket, the name given to the Indians, means" faraway land. "Twenty-five miles off the coast of Massachusetts in the Atlantic Ocean, we are really our own world.
Among in 1726 and through the 1800s, Nantucket was the whaling capital of the world. Great prosperity came from the sale of oil of whales for more than a century, enlightened cities in Europe. The captains, sailors, and merchants built magnificent houses and mansions that are still here as monuments to the affluent whaling era.
Today the island is proud to be one of the largest and most interesting districts in the U.S. history, with more than 800 homes that are kept all handsome and many historic sites. The Whaling Museum has exhibits depicting life aboard the whaling ship and has a world famous collection of art painted ivory. Next, the museum displays replicas of Peter Folger Chinese Trade ... "
