From birth to death are part of a series of rituals that mark each stage of our existence, baptism, marriage, burial, according to different religious faiths are the focus of ceremonies and liturgies filled with symbolism and traditions of long standing. Moreover in those cultures which developmental stage brings us to the most primitive of mankind practiced various initiation rituals that mark the maturity of a teenager who becomes an active member of a community with the responsibilities it entails, such as capacity to raise a family or wield a spear to hunt or kill another human being. Rites and symbols are part of our society since its inception. It appears that these ceremonies need to internalize processes and realities that otherwise be unacceptable as a death, or would go unnoticed in everyday life as it could be another year of life. Somehow the ritual, the ceremony, public or private act of remembering an event, setting a milestone in personal or collective memory is part of our nature. This simple reflection comes to purpose and Bicentennial celebration. What do we celebrate, why celebrate, it's worth, there are reasons for it?
us back when we celebrate the historical fact that at this time two hundred years ago a group of citizens took the first step in creating an independent nation and that in my opinion is worth celebrating. Independence of a nation, certainly builds gradually and with the combined efforts of many, however the first impulse is significant, which is like the first steps of a child are still unsure and hesitant, but breaking the inertia and daring that counts. All this plus in an era where the word was worth and every man was liable for his statements with his life or property. Enlightened bourgeoisie that formed the group called "Patriot" by taking the path of struggle for self-government risked his life and his property as demonstrated during the Reconquista later with a country occupied by a European professional army whose misdeeds have been told by profuse folk literature. Of course, seen through the eyes of citizens present that acts of September 18 and the cries of the Board want! Seem less glamorous, even ridiculous if you want or just revolutionaries viewed from another angle. But two hundred years ago there risked his life and paid.
What if the game was finally won? that is another matter and there is open discussion, true independence is not as true by several factors including globalization. In other words, how independent can a country in the world today are generated just interdependencies of all kinds, primarily economic?
Still, what happened in 1810 is worthy of commemoration, the cries of Board want! and the Independence movement must be understood in context and basically as the first step, the "we" of a dynamic process that was further developed in time to make Chile an independent nation.
